Tipping in China
China does not have a tipping culture. You are not expected to tip at restaurants, hotels, or for taxi rides. Some high-end hotels and restaurants may add a service charge (usually 10–15%) to the bill automatically. For private drivers, a small tip (¥20–50) is appreciated but not required.
Language
English is not widely spoken outside major hotels and tourist shops. A translation app with camera support is essential for menus, signs, and roadside emergencies. Learning a few Mandarin phrases helps.
Safety
Guilin is generally safe for tourists. Watch your belongings in crowded areas. On the road, give scooters and electric bikes plenty of space. Keep emergency contacts and your rental company's number saved.

Digital Setup Before You Arrive
These apps and services are essential for a smooth trip:
- Alipay Tour Pass: Foreigners can use this without a Chinese bank account. Bind your international Visa/Mastercard.
- WeChat Pay: Now accepts international cards. Useful for smaller vendors.
- DiDi: China's ride-hailing app (like Uber). Download and set up before arrival. Bind a foreign credit card.
- VPN: Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Google Maps are blocked in China. Install a reliable VPN before you travel.
- Maps.me: Download offline maps of Guilin and Yangshuo as a backup when mobile signal is weak.
Note: Google Maps does not work reliably in China even with a VPN. Use Baidu Maps or Amap (Gaode) for real-time navigation.
